Occasional Evenings: Back-to-School Film Screening—Romeo + Juliet

BISR Central
68 Jay Street, #425
Brooklyn, NY 11201

What does it mean to “update” Shakespeare? Join us Friday, September 20th, as we kick off the fall term with a special back-to-school screening of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet—a film that crystallized, in its heady and frenetic way, a youth-cultural aesthetic at the threshold of the end of history. Before the film, BISR faculty Ajay Singh Chaudhary, Isi Litke, and Rebecca Ariel Porte will take us back to the mid-90s to explore the pop-cultural landscape and its politics, asking: What makes a great teen drama—and a terrible one? What makes Luhrmann’s stylistic choices—some great and some very much not—work so well? And, given the countless historical costumes in which Shakespearean drama has been dressed, how does this particular adaptation uniquely focalize the tensions that shaped turn-of-the-millennium culture and politics?

The event is free to attend, with a suggested $10 donation. Beer, wine, seltzer, and snacks will be served. Doors open at 6:45pm. Please RSVP below.
