Occasional Evenings: Last Circle in a Slowdown — Big Bend in Concert

BISR Central
68 Jay Street, #425
Brooklyn, NY 11201

The magic of Big Bend’s music is its richness relative to the sparsity of its parts. Myriad soundings, whispers, phrases, pitches: all adducing, as they interweave, to a magnificent whole. Helmed by composer/pianist Nathan Phillips—whose “ear for sonic and compositional detail” Pitchfork calls “remarkable”—Big Bend makes multi-dimensional pop music that asks questions about its very structure. How can we think about form, about intention and spontaneity? Big Bend brings us close to the mystery of music. In beauty, it seems, lies the answer.

Join us Wednesday, November 20th, as BISR welcomes Big Bend, now touring their acclaimed third album, Last Circle in a Slowdown (Shimmy Disc), for a performance and post-concert discussion. With Phillips and BISR faculty, we’ll ask about songwriting and improvisation, about the possibilities of composition and the relation of musical parts to the whole. Why this style? What does it do? What does it grasp for?

Beer, wine, seltzer and snacks will be served. Attendance is free (with $12 suggested donation). Doors open at 6:45; the concert begins at 7pm. The event will stream live to the BISR Facebook page. Please RSVP below.
