Call for Faculty: European History, East Asia, Ecology, Political Economy

Brooklyn Institute for Social Research (BISR), a non-profit education and research center, is seeking four talented scholars/pedagogues to join our Associate Faculty. Prospective candidates should be prepared to teach at least two courses annually (each BISR course is four weeks in duration) either online or–for New York City based candidates–in-person. We are currently hiring in the following disciplines:

  • Modern European history: Theoretically informed, interdisciplinary approach; preferred specializations: early modern thought, French Revolution, social and economic history, “long” 19th century history (imperialism, industrial and political revolution, cultural history), WWI, WWII, post-war Europe, and the role of Europe within global systems of political economy and empire.
  • Political economy (must be based in or around New York City): Candidates should possess a broad familiarity with the classical traditional of political economy and expertise in Marxist, post-Marxist, and/or other heterodox critiques, as well as the ability to integrate theoretical, historical, and quantitative methodologies. Familiarity with theories of underdevelopment, reproductive labor, finance capital, cognitive capital, and/or primitive accumulation is expected. Candidates must be able to connect these theoretical frameworks to historical-material conditions along divisions of gender, race, geography, and capacity.
  • East Asian culture and/or politics: Expertise in humanistic and social scientific disciplines as focused on East Asia, including literature, history, philosophy, political science, economics, and sociology. Familiarity with critical theory, Marxism, and contemporary feminist and post-colonial thought and methods is preferred.
  • Environmental science/ecology: Expertise in environmental or ecological science. Ability to connect scientific findings and frameworks to contemporary issues and methods in other social scientific and humanistic disciplines is strongly preferred.
