Call for Faculty: Sanskritist
The Brooklyn institute for Social Research invites applications from Sanskrit scholars for a teaching position in our Language Learning and Critique Program. Our program is unique in offering rigorous courses in ancient languages (Greek, Latin, Arabic, Hebrew), as well as in German, to working adults. In addition to language acquisition, BISR language courses incorporate critical philology, attending to questions of poetics, semantics, rhetoric, translation, and reception history. Over the course of three trimesters–beginning in January each year–students learn the basic morphology and grammar of the language and are able to begin reading crucial texts in that language. First-year courses are followed by reading courses, where students are able to continue their studies in the intensive study of a single work or theme. Our goal is to build a community of readers.
We are looking for a Sanskrit scholar who holds a PhD or is ABD and is ideally based in or around the New York City metro area. The ideal candidate will be excited by the prospect of teaching Sanskrit in a non-traditional setting to a diverse class of working adults and will be inventive in integrating lessons in critical philology into their language pedagogy. As well, we are looking for a colleague who will contribute to the programming of our ongoing lecture series and who will be an active participant in our occasional group conversations on pedagogy. Candidates should be comfortable with online teaching but also open to offering an in-person session as well. Teaching will begin in late January or early February 2027.
A catalogue of recent and current language courses, reading groups, and lectures can be found here.
Please email a cv and a letter of application, with the subject line SANSKRIT INSTRUCTOR, that details teaching experience and thoughts on pedagogy, especially within the Institute’s three-trimester introductory sequence, to Bruce King (bruce@thebrooklyninstitute.
